Gita Pe Haath Rakh Kar...

B and i got talking today about religion and then were talking about how Hinduism is basically  a philosophy and not a  religion per say. We got talking about the holy book and realised that we have none! The
Bhagvad Gita isnt really a  holy book for Hinduism, at best it is codes and verses talking about philosophy and takes.I was wondering after that why do we use the "Geeta" in a  court of law and swear to say the truth based on it?? Technically it makes no sense at all. It all boils down to the Brit hang over still, we follow a  judicial system based on theirs and since they use the Bible we use the Gita. It does'nt make sense but we still do..why?? one wonders.Keeping my hand on the Gita and lying or telling the truth bears no significance to a  Hindu or anyone esle as it is not the significator in our case in India anyways. Such inanity. So many years after independence and we still tow the line.. or do we??

Quite an interesting thought to ponder. Well the british have altered a few course of events in the history and we still follow them blindly. I had an opportunity to view a quite interesting documentary made for Discovery/national geography channel, it was titled TEMPLES OF SOUTH EAST ASIA and it was an episode on the Temples of South India. I am sure you must have heard of the famous thanjavur ( TANJORE ) temple which is made of granite and the shadow of its gopuram does not fall on the ground. According to the documentary it is supposed to have been a mammoth construction undertaken by RAJA RAJA CHOLA to move so many tonnes of granite and build this massive structure surpassing the wonders of the world like pryamid of giza etc. But this rightful wonder of the world was shun and kept in the dark by the British because of the khajauro temple. The british officer who discovered the kahajuro temple was shocked by the explicit displays of the sculpture. And the Victorian British era made ip their mind by seeing the temples of khajuro that any temple of hinduism is not fit to represent India. They were more happy to promote TAJ MAHAL which didnt have any explicit sculptures or paintings as a architectural marvel of India. So from that time onwards the greatness of Hindu temples never really got it's due. If interested I can fwd you the link of the documentary ( it is a google video file). Kindly take some time off to do so... it is quite interesting and worth while. It is also made well.

Hey! Papia,
quite an interesting observation. Even I never thought about it. Though you are absolutely right by saying that BG has nothing to do with Hinduism. Nowhere in the BG this term has been mentioned. What BG represents is the highest philosophy - the absolute truth.
And moreover it is from the vedic times.

However if you observe more closely, the source, the content and the the end result of reading BG is all Krishna.

And Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And as per the injunctions of scriptures themselves one should never swear upon God, his names, books, paraphernalia.

I would recommend you read Bhagvad Gita - it presents the complete science of self realization capable of solving all the problems of life. Then you will never sing the famous song "Zindagi, Kaisi Hai Paheli Haaye. Kabhi ye hasaaye, Kabhi ye rulaaye!. You'll get answers to both.

Recommended Edition - Bhagvad Gita As It Is published by ISKCON - BBT.
